Allow Gmail to Open Mailto - Email Links

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to set up Chrome to open email links (mailto:) with Gmail.


Allow Gmail to Open All Email Links Instructions

  1. Navigate to Gmail.

  2. Check the right-hand side of the address bar for the protocol handler icon, shaped like a double diamond

  3. Click on the double-diamond icon. 

  1. A dialogue box will open. Select the Allow radio button.     

  2. If you do not see the double-diamond icon when you log in to Gmail, please proceed to the next section. 

 


Enabling the Protocol Handler Icon in Gmail

  1. In the Chrome browser, open up a new tab.

  2. Enter the following in the address bar: chrome://settings/handlers 

  3. The protocol handlers page will open. 

  1. If Gmail is listed beneath the Don’t allow sites to handle protocols section.

    1. Click the three dots or click the x to remove it.

  1. Select the Sites can ask to handle protocols radio button.

  2. Open Gmail. 

    1. If Gmail is already open, click the refresh icon. 

  3. Follow the steps in the section above to enable Gmail to open email links.
